About Us / Why Santa Clarita
Less than thirty miles north of Los Angeles and within the thirty mile zone (TMZ), the City of Santa Clarita is your one stop shop for all your filming needs. With nearly 60 sound-stages, seven local movie ranches, and a responsive film office with quick turn arounds for permit processing, Santa Clarita makes permitting easy. With diverse locations and looks, Santa Clarita has featured for Anywhere America, the Middle East, the old west, to alien worlds.
Founded in 2003, the Santa Clarita Film Office is here to help you find locations, obtain all the permissions and permits to film on City property (including parks, pools, sports fields, community centers, etc.), and coordinate any traffic control or parking requests. Additionally, the Santa Clarita Film Office can book any Los Angeles Sheriff Department officers and obtain all Los Angeles County Fire Department approvals for your filming needs.
The Santa Clarita Film Office also has a robust Film Incentive Program. Working closely with the California Film Commission, the Santa Clarita Film Office incentivizes California approved projects, locally based productions, as well as productions that frequently film in Santa Clarita and more. With an annual budget of $60,000 – filmmakers great and small have benefited from the Film Incentive Program and the City’s film friendly attitude.
Filming in the Santa Clarita Valley dates back to the early 20th century with such legends as Charlie Chaplin, William S. Hart, and Buster Keaton filming here. The next generation of stars including John Wayne and Gene Autry also filmed in Santa Clarita and were followed by greats like Steven Spielberg and Mel Brooks. Today, Santa Clarita continues to host everything from Academy Award winning projects to student films.
